Our twenty-fourth walk begins at East Malvern Railway Station. For public transport users in Burwood, SmartBus 903 runs south along Warrigal Road on its journey to Mordialloc. After Ashwood, it descends into Holmesglen. Leave the bus here, go to Holmesglen station, taking a citybound train for just one station to East Malvern. The walk is about 7km, and mainly level. Melway maps 69 and 68 cover the route. Sections of the walk have no tree cover, so prepare accordingly. If you have binoculars, bring them along.
In 1858 the area bounded by Warrigal and Highbury Roads, Burwood Highway (Ballyshanassy Road) and Gardiners Creek (Damper Creek) was named Ballyshanassy in honour of then Victorian Premier, John O’Shanassy.
Cancer Council Victoria is appealing to locals of all ages in Hawthorn and the surrounding areas of Boroondara to get a group of family, friends or colleagues together and form a team for Hawthorn’s much-loved Relay For Life on 23 March.
All the classic Boroondara Eisteddfod sections will be back again in 2019, including the highly-anticipated Boroondara Piano Concerto competition.
