THE public image of any community does not always tell the whole story of the lives of its residents or of the challenges they face. For some, there are times when assistance is needed for sudden setbacks or long term stress. That is when agencies such as Uniting East Burwood can offer a helping hand – including emergency relief, financial advice, personal counselling, or simply companionship.

“How do the musicians know what to play”? This is the most common question asked by punters when they first experience a traditional Celtic music session, probably in an Irish pub. Unlike at other music events, there aren’t any music stands or sheet music in front of the players, just a roomful of musicians on acoustic instruments in sync together.

One hundred years ago, Evangeline Ireland (Sister Faith) found a young disabled girl left inside a chicken coop while her parents were at work. That incident led to her establishing Victoria’s first free kindergarten for disabled children: ‘Yooralla’ (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of love’).

STREET Libraries are a beautiful home for books planted in your front yard. Accessible from the street, they are an invitation to share the joys of reading with your neighbours. If anyone has a book or two that they think others would enjoy, they just pop it into any Street Library they happen to be passing.

FENCING is a sport that conjures images of swashbuckling pirates, duels at dawn, and the elegant chivalry of a bygone age. However it is also a modern Olympic sport, presenting both a physical and tactical challenge between opponents. Whitehorse Chevaliers provides all the necessary safety equipment for beginners to help ensure everyone can participate safely. Most fencers take up the sport by joining a junior age class, or signing up for a beginner course. These run during school terms and are designed to progress fencers from the basic positions through to competition-level fencing skills.
