Cancer Council Victoria’s popular event, Bark For Life, is back at Jells Park this year and dog lovers of all ages in Victoria are encouraged to grab their pooch and get involved. Bark For Life is an event honouring the caring qualities of dogs during a human cancer experience and is an offshoot of the popular Relay For Life events. One hundred years ago, Evangeline Ireland (Sister Faith) found a young disabled girl left inside a chicken coop while her parents were at work. That incident led to her establishing Victoria’s first free kindergarten for disabled children: ‘Yooralla’ (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of love’).
Belated happy birthday greetings to local resident, Freda Miles (née Webb), who turned 101 years old on 22 August. Freda was born in Northamptonshire England, where she worked as a tailor. She and husband Reg married in 1938 just prior to World War II; she recalls that they were only bombed ‘a couple of times’!

FENCING is a sport that conjures images of swashbuckling pirates, duels at dawn, and the elegant chivalry of a bygone age. However it is also a modern Olympic sport, presenting both a physical and tactical challenge between opponents. Whitehorse Chevaliers provides all the necessary safety equipment for beginners to help ensure everyone can participate safely. Most fencers take up the sport by joining a junior age class, or signing up for a beginner course. These run during school terms and are designed to progress fencers from the basic positions through to competition-level fencing skills.
