On Sunday 10 May many Australians will celebrate Mother’s Day. The tradition of gift-giving on Mother’s Day, although well-established in the USA, did not begin in Australia until 1924. In 1870, American writer and women’s rights activist Julia Ward Howe, author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, had proposed that a mother’s day for peace be commemorated every year in June.
Surrey Park Lake (otherwise known as ‘Surrey Dive’) is the location of The Surrey Park Model Boat Club, started in the 1980s by a small group of model boat enthusiasts. The lake was formerly a quarry supplying clay to the local brickworks which, when the pit was exhausted, was allowed to fill with water and became the local swimming pool.
ABC Classic FM listeners will have heard of Australia’s Flinders Quartet (FQ) – one of Australia’s best-loved chamber music ensembles. This year they celebrate their 20th birthday with an outstanding series of concerts, sharing the cake and candles with Beethoven – commemorating his 250th year.
Artfully arranged scrapbooks documenting family stories become treasured heirlooms to be passed on for generations. Typical memorabilia include photographs, printed media, and artwork. Scrapbook albums are often elaborately decorated and frequently contain extensive journaling or written descriptions.
