A “Home Boy” remembers

16/07/2019 Chris Gray

“It was a great life. It stood me in good stead. ” – With these words Vern Williams sums up his years at Burwood Boys’ Home in the 1940s – sentiments that may surprise some used to hearing horror stories of institutional life.

Burwood Walks #25: Glen to Mount Waverley

15/07/2019 Mark Learmonth

Our twenty-fifth walk begins at Glen Waverley Railway Station, and finishes at Mount Waverley Railway Station. Public transport users in Burwood Bulletin’s catchment area have a large number of options to reach this station. There is a large bus terminal just beside the station. The walk is about 6km (depending upon how much “exploring” you do), and is mainly level. Melway maps 71 and 70 cover the route. If you have binoculars, bring them along.

Burwood Walks #24: Caulfield Racecourse Reserve Walk

03/04/2019 Mark Learmonth

Our twenty-fourth walk begins at East Malvern Railway Station. For public transport users in Burwood, SmartBus 903 runs south along Warrigal Road on its journey to Mordialloc. After Ashwood, it descends into Holmesglen. Leave the bus here, go to Holmesglen station, taking a citybound train for just one station to East Malvern. The walk is about 7km, and mainly level. Melway maps 69 and 68 cover the route. Sections of the walk have no tree cover, so prepare accordingly. If you have binoculars, bring them along.
